Every Place We Find Ourselves, A Piece Gets Left Behind

My wife and I moved the the DC area about 10 years ago. We lived in Bethesda, MD for 4ish year before moving to Alexandria, VA (Old Town area 2 blocks off of King St.) We were there during the pandemic, in our little carriage house. We have a lot of amazing memories in that town. I started playing music at an Irish pub called Murphy's every week near the end of 2020 when everyone was allowed inside with masks on (while not sitting and what not) I was the only one allowed to take off my mask so I could sing. I met the entire staff there and I only knew their eyes. It wasn't until like 4 months later when things started opening up I actually saw some of their faces and it was like meeting them all over again. Wild times. Well, I'd play until late at night and sometimes stay later for a drink with the staff and then I'd walk home. Old Town, is kind of a touristy area so it gets very busy and full of humans near Murphys at times. When I would leave to walk home I had the city to myself. It was only a 3 or 4 block walk but it was cool to be able to experience the city in that way. I would take pictures of myself walking with all my gear under these alley lights. I was always tired but I wanted to remember those moments. Our best friends live in Old Town. I miss them.

Life is funny like that, you dream and chase and try and connect and open up and build and then things change. Your dreams may change or stay the same. Relationships get held onto but it's different. I think if it's worth holding onto you will have the strength to do so. No one ever knows what the future holds we're all just chasing our dreams and living with the results.

LYRICS

I walk your brick laced sidewalks

In the middle of the night alone

Took in all your dim lit allies

Til I called them my own

The first time that I saw your streets

Felt like I'd been before

The place that some of my closest friends

Still call their home

Old Town will forever stay near and dear to me

And even if we're gone a part of us will never leave

It left a mark inside our hearts although our time was brief

Old town will forever stay near and dear to me

See the river at the break of day

Before the city comes to life

Hear the music drift on the night

Humming it's lullaby

Every place we find ourselves

A piece gets left behind

But when we leave the memories

Are like souvenirs in my mind

Old Town will forever stay near and dear to me

And even if we're gone a part of us will never leave

It left a mark inside our hearts although our time was brief

Old town will forever stay near and dear to me
